Honestly … What's Your Take on Honesty?

I just read Donald Miller’s blog, “How Wise Is Honesty” http://donmilleris.com/2011/01/21/how-wise-is-honesty/ and sat back for a moment to ponder the question. Honestly, how important is honesty to you? And does it matter who is being honest? I know when my kids were growing up I wanted them to be completely honest with me. I did not trust their filter systems to be sure they were safe … and really … I just wanted to know what was going on in their little worlds. But now, as adults, do I want their honesty? I’ve learned the hard way to not ask questions in areas that I don’t want them to lie to me in. They are individuals with their own paths to walk. They know where I stand on issues and I know they would not want to disappoint me in areas that we do not agree, so I stay away from asking questions on sensitive topics. I love and respect my children … and they me.
What about Best Friends or a Spouse?  “Does my butt look big in this” Do we dare ask that question and wait for an honest answer? And try to discuss the new movie just coming out, The Dilemma. I can’t wait to see it. It’s a story about a man who discovers his best friend’s wife is having an affair. What to do in a situation like this?
If people really want to know the truth, why is it that the person sharing the truth is usually kicked to the curb? I’m with Don on this … I want to hear your thoughts on honesty.

Honesty always. I would much rather someone tell me how they truly feel…even if it hurts. If they really think my butt looks big in those pants then I want to know. Sure, if they lie I’ll feel good about myself for a brief moment, but if your butt really does look big….how is that solving anything…knowing the truth might motivate me to workout a little more, become healthier.
Of course, there are things that I don’t really want to know. The truth can be harsh and if I don’t necessarily agree with what’s being said it can get frustrating. However, if everyone lies (even about little things) how will anyone know who they are? How will you know who you are? It’s by hearing the truth (whether we agree or not) that we find out who we are….what we believe….how we feel….or even how we learn something new, some other idea that we may not have ever thought of.
Just my opinion of course, but nothing good comes from lies….even little ones…I want the cold hard truth…it can only make me a better person….

About honesty…I believe in being honest…I taught my children to be honest…but I will not be honest if it will hurt someones feelings…like “does my butt look too big in these pants?” And I feel like I do not have to be honest about my past…It is MY past…MY business…mostly under the blood I might add 🙂 But for the most part being honest will keep you out of trouble in the long run…
